OPPORTUNITY: Development Money From BFI NETWORK

Applications for the Early Development Fund are open!

  • Got a brilliant idea for a feature film?

  • Want some development money to allow time to work on the treatment?

  • Want guidance from the BFI NETWORK team?

Then you should definitely apply for BFI NETWORK's EDF. If successful, they will give you a sum of money (between £3000 and £5000) to write and develop the full treatment of your film idea.

Hot Off The Press:

At the latest EDF Q&A the team revealed that they are introducing a new phase into their funding and support applications: 'Stage 2 Funding'. Offering financial support to writers for their first draft. Approx £8000-£12000. BUT you must first have been successful in the Early Development Fund to be eligible for the Stage 2.

The application form is relatively lightweight compared to their Short Film Fund and other schemes they offer, so we advise everyone to enter, even if you're on the fence. At the very least, the application will help you to develop and flesh out your idea. So it's a great incentive to apply.

More about the Early Development Fund from BFI:

It supports writers who do not yet have the first draft of a script (or equivalent format for immersive work), to produce an initial treatment – a piece of writing that outlines the story, characters, themes and structure of the project – and related materials like a mood board or other visual content. The Fund supports long-form live-action, immersive and animation fiction projects.
You can apply with or without a producer.
Projects that are supported at treatment stage and which are completed to schedule will then be able to apply for funding for a first draft of the full feature-length screenplay, or equivalent format for immersive work.
This fund supports projects with writers based in England who have not yet written a feature film or immersive work that has been produced and received a distribution deal in the UK.

The 2023 fund opened Oct 12th and closes midday November 30th. So get applying!
